Top 10 Creative Summer Tech Activities For Kids This Summer

Summer vacation is just around the corner for some of the blog’s readers, and while it’s a nice break from the hectic daily grind, it’s not a time for students to take a break from learning! Summer is the perfect time for kids to discover new things, try new activities, and hone their skills in an exciting and fun way.

On today’s blog, I’ve rounded up a few summer fun ideas for kids that you’ll want to suggest to your family, try out in your summer program, or even use in the school year. Each activity is ready to be customized and has a technology component.

Of course, you can make adjustments or additions before sending one or two as ideas in your summer newsletter to your families.

10 Summer Activities For Kids

One of the best parts of summer is the opportunity to explore themes that kids are interested in but may not have the opportunity to explore during the school year. Whether you’re a budding photographer, a budding author, or a budding coder, there’s a summer activity for every child.

Each of the ideas on the list below has a tech tie-in. But if you’ve got an EdTech tool you love that could do the same thing, we’d love to hear from you as you brainstorm the best summer activities to share with your students and families.

Create a digital photo journal

Use your Chromebook, iPad, or any other camera-equipped mobile device to capture your summer adventures. From there, students can add captions and other creative elements to their digital scrapbooks using graphic design apps such as Adobe Express and Canva.

Start a video blog

An alternative to a YouTube channel is a video blog, also known as a vlog. This is especially useful if you’re trying to keep children out of the public internet. Instead, students can make short videos to teach a subject, review a toy or play, or document their summer activities. For kid-friendly video creation, use Microsoft Flip or iMovie.

Become a podcast host

If your child loves storytelling, help them create, record, and edit a podcast; tools such as Soundtrap and GarageBand can help children record, record, and share their podcasts. Adobe Podcast is one of the more recent tools that makes it easy to edit on the screen.

Design a website

Start learning the fundamentals of web design with child-friendly tools like Google Sites. You can also create a multi-page website about your hobby or passion. Another website builder that kids can use is Canva.

Go on a virtual field trip

I love to post virtual field trips on my blog! You may have seen my previous posts on 9 spring virtual field trips and How virtual field trips can inspire curiosity. Virtual field trips are a great summer activity to add to your itinerary. Virtual field trips allow you to visit museums, historic sites, and even zoos worldwide using virtual tours and live webcams.

Write an ebook

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know that I am a huge Book Creator fan. Young writers can create and publish their own digital short stories. For free resources and ideas for summer fun for kids, read this blog post about Be An Author Month! It’s great for any season!

Learn a new language

Language learning apps such as Duolingo’s for Schools make it easy and fun to learn a new language. Duolingo for School has been featured on my blog before, but there are a few more tools you might want to check out if you’re a family looking for summer fun for the kids.

Compose a piece of music

Use GarageBand and MusicFX to unleash your inner musician. As I said before, GarageBand can be used for various purposes, including music production and podcasting.

If students are more comfortable expressing what kind of music they would like to listen to, recommend MusicFX to your students’ families. I have included MusicFX as an “experiment” tool in my Alfa in Education Membership.

Explore digital art

Encourage your students to explore drawing and illustration tools such as Procreate and Sketchbook. Introduce AutoDraw as a student sketching tool if they need a little more support. Or, you could encourage your families to explore generative artificial intelligence tools that aid in image creation.

Track the stars

If you’re a parent looking for summer fun for your children, you might want to encourage them to download the stargazing app. There are a few different options available, such as SkyView or Star Walk, both of which can be used to find constellations or objects in the night sky.

What summer activities will you be adding to your family this year? We’ve put together a list of summer fun for kids that you can add to yourself. Technology opens up a world of new opportunities for summer learning.

With a little bit of planning and motivation, kids can turn this summer into one where they learn new skills, discover their passions, and enjoy themselves. They can play the best android games to keep them engaged.
