After the huge success of 2022, the Indian film industry has been pretty quiet for the first half of 2023. Most of the movies that came out in the first six months of 2022 didn’t get a lot of attention, but there were a few that did.

So far, there’s still a lot of talk about a Bollywood crisis because Hindi filmmakers haven’t figured out how to keep up with changing tastes in India.

Rocky and Rani are a couple who come from completely different backgrounds but end up falling in love. They are played by Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt. To see if they could fit into each other’s families, they decided to live apart from each other for a while. What follows is a look at patriarchy in a big, dramatic setting with all the typical Karan Johar family dynamics.

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is an action-packed heist movie that has two intertwined crime stories at the core. Yami and Sunny are the stars of the movie as the couple who are the main characters.

Yami plays a flight attendant while Sunny plays a debt-ridden business owner. What starts as a normal relationship ends in a crime caper when they plan a daring diamond robbery on a plane to pay off their debt.

Gadar 2

One of the biggest surprises Bollywood had in 2023 might have been the announcement of a follow-up to Gadar, which was a one-of-a-kind movie that told the story of a love story through the lens of the 1947 Indian partition. It’s been 20 years since Gadar came out, and now it’s come out again. 

This time, it’s taking place during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. Sunny Deol & Ameesha Patel are back as Tara Singh & Sakeena and their son Jeetey who has grown up and is now a soldier in the Indian army. When he hears that Jeetey is stuck in Pakistan, Tara decides to go back to his homeland, just like he did to save his wife.

Animal

People have been talking about Animal for the last two years because of all the amazing stories behind them. The movie is directed and written by Kabir Singh’s dad Sandeep Vanga, who is known for being a bit of a wild card in the film industry. He will be starring in what many people think will be his weirdest role yet. 

Since most of the story details are kept a secret, there’s a lot of hype around the movie because Vanga has said that it’s going to be a more controversial one than Kabir Singh’s. Animal is a crime action movie that’s thought to explore the human need for violence through the story of a Punjabi criminal family.

Lost

Lost is A new movie directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury. It’s a thrilling story about a crime journalist who takes on the investigation of the case of a 16-year-old boy who was a theatre activist before he went missing. Yami Gautam plays the lead role in the movie. 

A simple disappearance case starts to connect Gautam to all kinds of shady politics and corrupt government, and he’s the only one who’s willing to put his life on the line to find out the truth.

The Kerala Story

The Kerala Story was a controversial movie due to its religious theme, but it still managed to make waves when it came out in May. This movie is based on a true story about three women who went to Afghanistan with their husbands to join the terrorist group ISIS. Shalini, played by Adah Sharma, is the main character in the story and is portrayed as a victim of religious fanaticism. 

The movie was based on real people, but it was also criticized for using inaccurate stats about conversions in India. Still, it was a hit with Hindi audiences and is currently the 3rd highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023.

IB71

The IB71 is a spy story with a twist that’s sure to grab your attention. It’s got a lot of action and a story that’s easy to relate to. The movie takes place during the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. 

Agent Dev from the Indian intelligence agency gets a tip-off that Pakistan is planning to invade India, so he decides to put an air blockade on the country. To make a good excuse for the air ban, he came up with the wild idea of hijacking a commercial Indian shipment.

Bloody Daddy

Shahid Kapoor has had a pretty good year so far in 2023, with Farzi becoming India’s top-rated streaming series and Blood Daddy being the top-grossing Indian movie of the year. Kapoor has always had a knack for playing crazy, messed-up characters, and his performance in Blood Daddy is a great example of that.

This action-packed movie stars Bollywood star Javed Akhtar as an Indian cop who is forced by a drug lord to give back a ton of drugs he’s seized, while his son’s life is on the line. It’s full of twists and turns, and it’s sure to be a thrilling ride! He’s determined to fight back, so he heads out on a wild night of gunplay and tries to win the game.

Satyaprem Ki Katha

Satyaprem ki Katha is a movie that brings all the bubbly, romantic vibes of Bollywood romances to life. It’s a movie that took people by surprise with its honesty and compassion for people’s problems. Kartik and Kiara Aaryan are the stars of the movie, playing the couple Sattu & Katha. Aaryan plays a young man who is out of work and has been waiting for his wife to get married for a long time, while Advani plays the character of Katha.

Pathaan was the most buzzed-about Indian movie of 2023, not just in Hindi but all over the country. Shah Rukh Khan came back after four years to play one of Bollywood’s biggest stars. 

The movie marked Khan’s return to the big screen with all the bells and whistles of a spy action movie. It was the second highest-grossing Hindi movie ever, and people said it was the start of Bollywood’s comeback as India’s top movie business.
